Feature Project:
UAB's Heritage Hall - Birmingham, AL

UAB's Heritage Hall is a new 95,000-square-foot academic building that opened for classes with the spring semester 2008.

Located on the northwest corner of the Campus Green on University Boulevard at 14th Street, Heritage Hall is the first academic building to be built on that part of campus in approximately 30 years. It will house the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences programs, plus labs for mathematics and communication studies and faculty offices.

Heritage Hall is one of the anchor buildings for the Campus Green that already includes other CRS projects including  the Campus Recreation Center, plus Campus Dining and Blazer Hall dormitory facility. The school’s physical relocation there is significant for SBS, which always has been located on the periphery of the academic campus, said UAB President Carol Z. Garrison, Ph.D.

The new building will provide classrooms, lecture halls, instructional labs, and faculty offices in quantities and sizes appropriate to the instructional needs of the Core Curriculum and the graduate and undergraduate programs in the academic disciplines. The instructional spaces will have multi-media instructional technology and provide special purpose centers to support interdisciplinary activities, tutoring, and administration.  KPS Group, Inc. lead by principal Hugh Thornton, Jr., Susan Lineberry, with Goody Clancy & Associates as associate architects.

CRS provided complete engineering services including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection engineering as well as security and network design services. CRS principal Ken Cater lead a CRS team that included Don Kitchens, Richard Stehr, Charles Foshee, Mike Romine, Sam Dunn, David Huddleston and John Thomas.  This "Smart Building" incorporated a mechanical energy recovery unit, power and lighting control systems, a wireless data network, day lighting controls and other  advanced energy efficient technologies.
